The Vineyards

Hopkins Vineyardshopkins Vineyards
Set on the northern shore of Lake Waramaug, Hopkins Vineyard, a family-owned Connecticut Century Farm, proudly maintains a tradition of making fine wines of award- winning quality. In 1787 Elijah Hopkins, returning from the Revolutionary War, chose this rich and fertile site on Lake Waramaug to settle his family and start the Hopkins Farm. Our farm has witnessed many diversified forms of agriculture over the years including the raising of sheep, race horses, grain crops, tobacco, and in the more recent past dairy farming. In 1979 the first vines were planted and our 19th century barn was converted into a state-of-the-art winery.

The Wine:
Hopkins Vineyard has a long standing reputation for producing wines of outstanding quality. Our wines consistently win gold, silver, and bronze medals in National and International competitions. Our Sparkling Wine is crafted with meticulous care in the traditional Champagne method. Some of our wine consist of Chardonnay, Vineyard Reserve, two barrel aged red table wines Cabernet Franc, and Highland Estate. At Hopkins Vineyard we are also well known for our semi-sweet wines; our Rose, Westwind, Sachem's Picnic, and Cider are excellent choices for light luncheons or picnics. Those of you who appreciate a true dessert wine will be pleased with our late harvest Vidal Blanc. We leave the grapes on the vine until they are intensely concentrated with natural sugar making our Vidal Blanc richly sweet with delicate spice flavors and floral aromas.

When you visit the winery our friendly and knowledgeable staff will guide you through the wine tasting and help you select the best wines to make your daily meals more pleasurable. At Hopkins Vineyard our focus is on producing wine of quality and excellence. As a family owned business we are committed to our craft as much for your family as for ours.

The Vineyards:
Since we planted our first vineyard our goal has always been to make wine of exceptional quality from grapes grown exclusively on our family farm. Growing our own grapes enables us to be in complete control of our vines and vinify the wine to our high standards. The unique location of Hopkins Vineyard makes it the only vineyard in Connecticut influenced by an inland lake; this extends our growing season and allows us to grow grape varieties which ordinarily would not thrive in our climate. We are dedicated to growing vitis vinifera grapes: Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir as well as better European-American grapes. Our wines are intensely rich and complex with a quality you can only achieve from perfectly-managed vineyards.

Unique Offerings:
We welcome you to visit Connecticut's first winery-established wine bar. Located in the Hayloft of our 19th Century barn, the Wine Bar features a casual atmosphere of charming cafe tables with a stunning view of Lake Waramaug.

Visitors can relax and enjoy our award-winning wines either by the glass or bottle along with a delicious selection of cheeses and country pates served with fresh bread.

Throughout the winery we have a wonderful variety of gift items as well as unique and hard to find gourmet foods.

Special Award/Recognition:
Hopkins Vineyard is a family owned Connecticut Century Farm. We are one of the very few farms left in Connecticut that are owned and operated by the same family for over 200 years.

The Hopkins Inn
Sitting high above the northern shore of Lake Waramaug, the Hopkins Inn has welcomed travelers since 1847. Guests enjoy expansive views of the lake, the Berkshire foothills, and neighboring vineyards from the dining areas and guest rooms. In addition, guests have access to the waters of the lake through the Hopkins Inn beach, located a short distance from the inn. Adirondack chairs on the lawn provide a pleasant afternoon's rest and are just steps above the sandy shoreline.

Doc’s Trattoria & Pizzeria
Doc’s offers quality, quantity and excellent service for in house and carry out business. The menu is very traditional, but special. Pastas are al dente; the seafood is fresh and additions are made daily. What does Roberto recommend for Italian style dinner? Nice bottle of red wine (your choice) accompanied by San Pellegrino mineral water with a slice of lemon, Pugliese country bread with roasted garlic and olive oil to dip.
