The Vineyards

Sharpe HillSharp Hill Vineyards
Sharpe Hill Vineyard is Connecticut’s largest and most award winning winery located in the historic town of Pomfret—just minutes from scenic Route 169 and from the Putnam antiques district. Sharpe Hill is also centrally located from many points in New England—75 minutes from Boston, 45 minutes from Worcester, 55 minutes from Providence and 55 minutes from Hartford. The Tasting Room is open year round for wine tasting and purchase of wine every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11-5. The Fireside Tavern is open year round for dining and private events by reservation only. We recommend booking well in advance.

When patrons visit Sharpe Hill Vineyard, they are surrounded by over 100 acres of historic rural Connecticut landscape. Patrons are treated to a view of lush vines that rise over 700 feet above the surrounding countryside and a vista that stretches to Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The gardens are situated at the base of the vineyard and are modeled after the wine gardens of Europe. In addition to walking through the vineyard and tasting our award winning wines, we encourage you to reserve a table and enjoy a gourmet meal in our Fireside Tavern. The Tasting Room and Fireside Tavern are both located within a beautifully reproduced eighteenth century building decorated early American style. The Fireside Tavern is an intimate restaurant perfect for enjoying a food and wine experience.

The Wines:
At Sharpe Hill Vineyard, we are constantly striving to produce wines of the highest quality. Since opening in 1997, we have received over 200 medals in international competitions.

  • Ballet of Angels-A bright, crisp, semi-dry, white wine with an impressive floral bouquet. This wine has wonderfully refreshing citrus flavors reminiscent of sweet grapefruit. We suggest serving this wine well chilled as an aperitif or as the perfect accompaniment to spicy foods.

  • Cuvee Ammi Philips-Our limited edition Cuvee is made in brand new French Oak barrels with Chardonnay grapes from North Fork, Long Island. This full bodied Chardonnay is best when served with salmon/seafood or poultry dishes.

  • American Chardonnay-An American barrel fermented Chardonnay with a complex bouquet of fruit and oak. This smooth buttery 100% Chardonnay is best when served with Salmon and other fish or chicken dishes.

  • Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay-An estate bottled, Burgundian style Chardonnay blended with Melon de Bourgonne aged in French oak. This elegant, dry wine is crisp, well-balanced, and possesses a delicate, soft finish with a hint of apples. It is a superb complement for lighter foods, especially seafood and chicken.

  • Dry Riesling-A fragrant, dry Riesling that offers a gentle, floral bouquet coupled with hints of lime and sweet grapefruit on the tongue. Our Sharpe Hill Vineyard Dry Riesling is best when served with seafood or Asian fusion dishes.

  • Dry Summer Rosé-Our latest release, our dry Rosé is a beautifully colored, aromatic Rosé with hints of strawberry.

  • Red Seraph-A dry table wine featuring a robust blend of Merlot and St. Croix. This exquisitely colored, ruby red wine is soft and smooth and is the perfect accompaniment to lamb, pasta dishes, and chocolate desserts.

  • Cabernet Franc-A bold, Bordeaux-style, Claret wine that is made entirely from our Cabernet Franc grapes. This wine has a classic Cabernet bouquet. We suggest serving this dry wine with all red meat dishes.

  • St. Croix-An estate bottled, dry, Rhone-style wine made entirely from our St. Croix grapes. The St. Croix is unique: elegantly dry with a smooth buttery finish. It is a wonderful accompaniment to beef, lamb and pasta dishes.

  • Select Late Harvest-This dessert wine is made entirely from our estate-grown, handpicked, botrysized Vignoles grapes. This stunning, golden wine is a mouth filling blend of pineapple, apricot, and honey with a nicely balanced level of acidity. It features a bouquet of peaches and apricots and offers a remarkably long finish.

The Vineyards:
Sharpe Hill’s first vines were planted in 1992. The vineyard has since expanded to include 25 acres of grapes, including Chardonnay, Melon de Bourgogne, and Vignoles for white wines; and Cabernet Franc, St. Croix, and Carmine for red wines. The vineyard is situated on a 700 foot slope, and has a microclimate that mimics many of the wine regions of Europe. In fact, the latitudinal location of Sharpe Hill Vineyard is comparable to that of Rome, Italy.

Unique Offerings:
Sharpe Hill Vineyard currently offers sumptuous dining year round on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We offer a selection of wood grilled entrées and our chef’s gourmet specialties, all of which have received national and regional acclaim.
